Carrel Broadwater Matney was born 1832 Haywood Co, TN, and died 1903 Siskiyou Co, CA. He married Margaret Ann Maupin 1859 near Ruch, Jackson Co, OR, daughter of Boyd and Amanda (Richardson) Maupin. Margaret died 1921 at home near Ruch, OR. They had 17 children: Samuel Adams died young, Jefferson Davis married Margaret E Haskins, Alvis Madison married Rose A Hunter, Carrol Brooks died young, Nancy, Martha Jane, Sarah May married Frank M Roundtree, Thomas Franklin married 1st Julia Ann Turner, and 2nd Ella Martin, Mary Samantha married Charles L Hamilton, William Wesley married Grace V Pierce, George Washington married 1st Minnie Gregg, and 2nd Susan Virginia (Lilley) Barrow, John Newton married Frances Fern Swartzfager, Isaac Boyd married 1st Dora Ann, married 2nd Jayne Ann, married 3rd Editha L, and married 4th Sylvia, Amanda Mildred married James A Bridges, Icie Binda married Henry Nevil Lofland, Anna Elizabeth married William E Copple, and Della Margaret married Arthur G Lewis. Carrel B. and brother James came west by wagon train and arrived in Oregon in October 1850. He had a 320 acre Donation Land Claim near Eagle Point, OR. He sold this and bought a farm along the Applegate River near Ruch, OR. He was given land for government service. He and brother James had a mule team freight line from Yreka, CA to Portland, OR. 1857 he signed a petition for a road between Salem and Eagle Mills, and 1858 signed a petition to incorporate Monmouth, OR. Tax lists 1855-59 Jackson Co, OR he has 320 acres. Early 1850s Matney brothers help build the Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Jackson Co, OR. 1853/4 Matney Chapel was built near Ruch, OR where Carrel was a lay preacher. He had mining claims 1850s-1899 in the area. Carrel did jury duty in 1879, 1882, 1885. He had a blacksmith shop on his farm near Ruch. 1903 at time of his death he was at Happy Camp near Yreka, CA where son Jeff and family lived
1850 Jim and brother Carrel went by wagon train back to OR arriving there October 1850. Jim's 320 acre Donation Land Claim was on Dry Creek near Eagle Point, OR. He and brother Carrel had a mule team freight line from Yreka, CA to Portland, OR. 1852 he was a scout for the wagon train that his future wife's family were with. 1853, 1855/6 James was a Lieutenant in the Oregon Indian Wars. He was given 160 acres land for his military service, and given a pension in later years. In Oregon Territorial papers it is stated 1857 he signed petitions for a road from Salem to Eagle Mills, and 1858 another to incorporate Monmouth, OR. He had gold mining claims with brothers in Jackson and Douglas Co, OR
